Protein slipped into everything, vitamins from anywhere but a whole piece of fruit, oils spun out of thin air: Food tech companies have been hard at work finding ways to make the way we eat more futuristic and fun.
The past couple of years haven’t been kind to food tech companies. Many promising startups, particularly in the alternative protein space, have struggled to scale. Food tech companies brought in just $2.8 billion in venture capital in the final quarter of 2024, a record low, according to PitchBook.
Despite the headwinds, a handful of companies stand out for anticipating what customers and big corporations need today. In particular, supplements and better-for-you versions of everyday favorites are booming, and companies that help food businesses operate more efficiently and sustainably show promise.
Consumers are obsessed with hitting their macros, leading food companies to add protein to everything from popcorn to soft drinks. Darien, Connecticut-based Aloha takes a more traditional route, making plant-based protein bars, powders, and drinks. In keeping with its name, Aloha sources ingredients for its Hawaiian Special Edition bars from farms across Hawaii. The company saw 80 percent growth in revenue last year, with sales over $100 million.
